The Chalice – December 2025

Meet The Board: Linda Lincoln

Hello, my name is Linda Lincoln and I am currently in the first year of a two year term as a Trustee-at-large on the Board of the UFL.

My husband, David Winninger, has been a member of this congregation since the 1950’s, when his parents joined the UFL. David introduced me to this faith and we were married at the First Unitarian Church of Ottawa prior to moving to Montreal. I joined the UFL in the 1980’s, after we moved to London, when it was still located on Victoria Street. Our three children attended the Religious Education program (now called the Religious Exploration program) for many years.

Since the 1980’s, I have sung with the UFL Choir; taught in the RE program; served on the RE Committee; the Caring Team; the Finance Committee, and the Property Committee. I was the Assistant Revenue Secretary and then the Revenue Secretary for 5 years and have volunteered for many Stewardship Campaigns and Fall Fundraisers.

In addition, I served two three-terms on the Board of Trustees (2001-2004 and 2018-2021) as Vice-President, President and Past President. In this community, I have come to appreciate the value of listening to diverse views and have been privileged to witness teamwork in action. My experience has disproved the commonly-held theory that ‘committee meetings are a waste of time and never actually accomplish anything’.

Along with other UFLers, I have had the opportunity to try out or develop new skills in a safe atmosphere. I have enjoyed investing my time and talents in this faith community during the past four decades and have built many cherished relationships.

We currently have seven Trustees on the Board, all of whom are caring, diligent and enthusiastic. They are a pleasure to work with and inspire me to do more. I look forward to challenging times ahead, while remaining hopeful that our beloved UU community will continue to welcome individuals and families who are searching for truth and meaning in their lives.

The Nature of Conciousness

Service and Worship Leader: Bob Harrington

Scientific discussion about the nature of consciousness is gradually getting closer to the mystic understanding. To quote Scientific American magazine some scientists have “embraced a form of panpsychism and even suggested that individual particles might be somehow aware”. That is consciousness is present everywhere and our brain makes use of it.

Spiritual teachers believe that three basic concepts are necessary to make sense of this and they are all reflected in a deep understanding of Unitarian Universalism and Christianity too. They are that consciousness supports everything that exists and it evolves in the individual through reincarnation and karma.

These three doctrines support our hope in the further evolution of life and promise amazing and beautiful discoveries and changes as our society continues to evolve.

My refection will develop these ideas and strengthen our hope, faith and love.

Don’t forget there is a Potluck this Sunday. Bring a dish or if you can’t we still have lots of food!

Hope: What’s your Symbol?

Service and Worship Leader: Laura-Beth Falter

Humans use symbols to create shared understanding, form identities and build social structures. Our ability to communicate complex, abstract ideas through symbols has been a key to our success as a species. Symbols of hope express humanity's resilient belief in a better future and our capacity to achieve it. In this service, we'll explore some enduring representations of hope, including ancient, modern and uniquely Canadian symbols.
